This section focuses on the course development and delivery process. Please write your thoughts and comments anywhere you want - We will continue to work on clean up and refining this space over time.

We have generally divided the Development and Delivery process into 4 categories - Isses that relate to: Process, Information, Rules and People. For each of those four categories, we've identified below both What we know (or think we know) and What we need to find out. Do you agree with everything in the We Know list? Are there more things we still need to find out? Your input is required :)

Process

What we know (or think we know) Thoughts/ Comments What we need to find out Thoughts/ Comments
Having a Master version of course then creating working copies for students is currently required (source content - 1:many) How will any proposal interact with Banner? Example
Current system has issues when making copies for master to working (permissions not translating, certain files do not come, additional structure added) making extra work for staff How important is it that content is easily pulled out from LMS, exports in bulk in a usable format (not just backup file or “package”) Example
A method to integrate content development into LMS as it is being developed is desired by some (development closer to final presentation) How should content be chunked to best meet the needs of sutdents? Example
Using HTML format provides fast access, potential sophisticated delivery of content for students What is the best way to deliver content – integrated HTML /standalone ie downloadable documents? Example
Current upload of content for OL is very efficient and flexible (XML & HTML & Scripting) – Production workflows – but general content development is not What is the best way to edit content within the LMS? Example
Our content currently uses aspects of LMS but is not truly within LMS (use external file formats) How will files be accessed, deployed and replaced? Example
Moving courses can be an onerous task Not all tools same between systems How will our scripting processes need to be adjusted? Example
How to interact/get better feedback loops with students and faculty within the LMS. Example
What major issues might we encounter? Example
How easily can we transfer existing courses from Blackboard into a new LMS? Example
How significantly might we need to alter a typical course when moving from Blackboard to a different LMS? Example
Do students prefer to have material grouped by type or time or both? Example
Example Example
Example What is the best way to structure content within the LMS? Example

== Information ==

What we know (or think we know) Thoughts/ Comments What we need to find out Thoughts/ Comments
LMS Systems do not version content – no going back once change committed. Example Example Example
Most of our current courses (OL) contain Blackboard specific content or references. Example Example Example
A handful of our current courses still contain references to the previous LMS. Example Example Example

Rules

What we know (or think we know) Thoughts/ Comments What we need to find out Thoughts/ Comments
Some of the material in our courses has to be behind a secure fire wall (copyright clearance restrictions) Example Who will maintain the system? Example
Choice of learning tool determines how content designed/added to environment Example Are we wanting to make content “open”? Example
OL has used the LMS within course navigation options for student navigation (not added our own) Example Can a system be both closed and open? Example
OL has used external styling for its course pages (not using internal themes) Example Are we trying to keep a new LMS similar to Learn as we did last time? Example
Very limited control of working environment by end users and difficult to get feedback and help from system administrators Example Should external resources (cleared documents) be put on a secure server away from course (handled like media)? Example
We have to be considerate of collective agreement Example What collective agreement issues do we need to consider? Example
We need to be considerate of copyright Example What copyright issues to we need to consider? Example

People

What we know (or think we know) Thoughts/ Comments What we need to find out Thoughts/ Comments
We (Staff) have experience using multiple different learning management systems/environments Example Example Example
We will need to train Example Example Example
Change will always come with resistance, regardless of benefits. Example Example Example
Best practices of introducing a new system – emerging practices Example Example Example
Learning new management systems take time Example Example Example
New systems may not be adopted wholeheartedly by all involved Example Example Example
Have not communicated what they can and cannot change in processes Example Example Example
Our ID’s and OLFM’s are familiar with tools provided or have means to find more information, know what they want and how to design for and use Example Example Example
It has been difficult or intimidating for OLFM’s to adjust current interface when they are required to do so Example Example Example
