This section focuses on the features that can help make a learning environment usable Please add to and change the below table. If you can't get your thought into the table, add them at the bottom - Learning and sharing should be a little messy.

What we know (or think we know) Do you agree with everything in this list? What questions does it bring to mind?

What we know(or think we know) Thoughts, ideas and suggestions
Students and faculty want a single system It would be good to know what faculty and students value in the current LMS they are using. This is good information for change management, i.e. to help people look towards potential gains rather than losses in the process (if they know what they value may be carried over into a new LMS).
An LMS generally works for our students but some tools do not work (including chat/ Email), others need to be improved (like help files)
LMS pre-packaged tools (email, discussions, wiki) may not be sufficient to meet needs
Different students and faculty have very different needs
Students and faculty both want intuitive, easy to use interface that is pragmatic and needs focused
We need more information about how faculty & students use the system
We need to provide course evaluations online (student feedback on their learning experience
There are alot of tools out there that might be valuable for students & faculty including:
  • Single sign on
  • Easy navigation
  • Attractiveness
  • Ability to customize
  • Ability to use on multiple devices
  • Langauge options
  • Ability to print
  • Accessibility features
  • Links to exam scheduling and other academic/ social supports
  • Other?
Technology in courses should be seamless/ invisible to students and faculty
Completing courses is a good time for students to be learning new tool and technologies to support future needs
Students are already familiar with Moodle if they take non-OL courses
Students rely on LMS for their course content. It is their only environment
Current system (OL) has good within course navigation capabilities

Notes from Hibbitts' Presentation

Multi-device design in Moodle

  • compare with Bb user survey…strong emphasis on user experience from both students and faculty

v.2.5 is game-changer b/c of bootstrap

Mobile learning in a multi-device world?
  • not necessarily ‘on-the-go’ or concerned about screen size
  • ubiquitous
  • situational (real-world context)
  • connected
  • personal
Multi-device experience goals
  • conceptual and visual consistency
  • content and functional parity (critical!)
  • seamless task transferability (…reduce user authentication)
  • think ecosystem, not isolated devices
  • optimize physical interactions on every device
The REAL story?
  • unparalleled opportunity to enhance or replace formal learning with
  • performance support
  • informal learning
  • social networking
  • real-time coaching and mentoring (not group chat…individual and private)
Need to UnMoodle Moodle
  • reduce boxes, lines
  • 2 columns
  • content is primary, not text hyperlinks (one click is too many)
  • fontawesome
  • frontpage can display discussion posts
  • delay user authentication to allow transfer btwn devices
  • posts are public, but only students can contribute
  • olark

Insert non-formatted text here What we need to find out What else do should we be asking?

Students Thoughts/Comments Faculty/OLFM Thoughts/Comments
Do students want one system for all courses? Do faculty want one system for all courses
What tools/ features do students like in the current system? What tools/ features do faculty like in the current system?
Do we need good qualilty tools (email, discussions, wiki) rather than slimmed down pre-packaged options to support students? Do we need good qualilty tools (email, discussions, wiki) rather than slimmed down pre-packaged options to support students?
What do students want?
What are needs of diverse student group (ex. Aboriginal students)? What are needs of diverse faculty groups? (ex. Ages, tech comfort, discipline specific…)
What does an easy to use (intuititive) interface for students look like? What does an easy to use (intuititive) interface for faculty look like?
What would a pragmatic, learner-focsued interface look like for a student? What would a pragmatic interface look like for OLFM/ faculty
Which of the following features would be helpful and why/ what would it look like?
  • Single sign on
  • Easy navigation
  • Attractiveness
  • Dynamic content
  • Ability to customize
  • Ability to use on multiple devices (ie. Mobile)
  • Language options
  • Ability to print/ save
  • Ability to upload video, pictures, media, etc.
  • Accessibility features
  • Links to exam scheduling and other academic and social supports?
  • Other? ||

In a course or program, when should the technology be invisible/ seamless? When should students be learning/using be using new tools? When should OLFM/ Faculty be using new tools?
