EDDL 5101 Education Technology in the Curriculum

Course Description and Learning Outcomes

This online, applied course is designed to provide educators with knowledge, skills and experience in implementing educational technology into a pedagogically sound learning environment. Education Technology in the Curriculum is intended to be a general launching point for your own exploration and learning about information technology (IT). Because the world of IT is complex, and especially so in education, it is challenging to design a course of study that is right for all students. You, and every other student, bring with you a unique set of experiences and interests that enhance your learning and determine your individual learning needs.

Students will be able to:

• Understand the basics of how networks and the Internet function.
• Demonstrate the effective use of networks and the Internet in learning.
• Integrate effective Internet searching strategies for finding resources related to specific curricular topics.
• Demonstrate and teach students how to critically evaluate Internet resources.
• Access and publish documents on the World Wide Web.
• Use RSS and an RSS reader for professional development and pedagogical purposes.
• Plan instructional activities that integrate technology.
• Discuss key issues in educational uses of technology.
• Discuss ethical and legal issues related to the use of technology in education with students and colleagues.
• Share resources and experiences with other educators.

 

EDDL 5111 Introduction to Distributed Learning

Course Description and Learning Outcomes

This course is designed to provide educators (Teacher Candidates, In-service Teachers, Faculty members and trainers) with an introduction to the skills required to teach in a distributed learning environment. Participants will explore the realm of distributed learning through: discussion about learning theory and pedagogy in online environments; consideration and application of techno-logical tools to enhance the learning environment; and examination and design of assessment strategies.

Students will be able to:

• Differentiate between distance learning, online learning, eLearning and distributed learning.
• Apply learning theory and pedagogy to facilitate learning in a distributed learning environment.
• Make decisions about the use of technology to enhance learning in distributed learning environments.
• Design a learning activity or unit that integrates technology and pedagogy.
• Identify current issues about integrating technology into the learning environment.
• Apply appropriate strategies for assessing learning in a distributed learning environment.

 

EDDL 5131 Multimedia in the Curriculum

Course Description and Learning Outcomes

This course is designed to introduce educators, and thus their students, to computer and web-based multimedia tools such as text, video, audio and digital photographs and graphics. There will be an emphasis not only on how to use the tools, but also on sound pedagogical practice to promote teaching and learning. Students in this course will learn how to identify, select, plan for, create, and integrate multimedia into instruction and have their students do the same in activities such as reports, digital story-telling, and portfolios.

Students will be able to:

• Assess their teaching environment for multimedia related hardware and software.
• Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of multimedia tools, including Web 2.0 tools.
• Discuss the role of multimedia in learning with colleagues and others.
• Integrate multimedia across the curriculum in a pedagogically sound manner.
• Effectively plan multimedia productions.
• Utilize multimedia effectively in teaching.
• Create and support activities for students that incorporate multimedia.
• Create performance and scoring rubrics for multimedia projects.
• Actively participate in the online community of practice related to this course, and to multimedia in education.
• Engage in reflective self-assessment and continuous improvement processes related to teaching and learning.

 

EDDL 5141 Online Teaching and Learning

Course Description and Learning Outcomes

This online, applied course is designed to provide educators with knowledge, skills and experience in implementing educational technology into a pedagogically sound learning environment. EDDL 5141 is designed to provide instructors with a basic introduction to the theory and practice of online teaching and learning and to develop the skills and strategies needed to facilitate courses in an online environment. Participants will reflect on their experiences as online learners to help develop their own philosophy of online teaching and learning. Using their philosophy, they will plan and conduct an online learning activity that they will facilitate for their fellow participants. Emphasis will be placed on student engagement and motivation, creating collaborative and interactive experiences and gaining practical experience. The course format will be an online seminar that models the development of learning communities. Participants will be directed to readings about current issues that they will discuss online and they will provide feedback to their fellow learners about their online facilitation experiences.

Students will be able to:

• Identify instructional strategies that enhance the online learning environment
• Create a philosophy of online teaching and learning by reflecting on their course reading and experiences gained as an online student
• Identify and discuss issues in online teaching such as community building, classroom management, student motivation, time management, expectations and student services.
• Outline Salmon's Five-Phase Module for Online Learning and use it to construct a facilitation plan
• Facilitate an online activity that uses emerging online communication technologies

 

EDDL 5151 Managing your Technology Classroom

Course Description and Learning Outcomes

Participants will explore a variety of methodologies, tools and technologies to enhance teaching and learning in their specific educational context. They will engage in critical discourse about the use of information technology in a number of different educational settings, evaluate the resources available to them, and develop strategies to make the most effective use of those resources for themselves and their students.

• Identify, describe and evaluate existing educational uses of technology
• Engage in critical discourse with regard to appropriate uses of technologies
• Critically evaluate potential uses of specific technologies to support learning
• Survey, assess and evaluate technological and related resources available within their own educational context
• Distinguish between ideals and what is realistically possible within their educational context
• Integrate technologies to provide information-rich environments for student learning and to help students achieve curricular learning outcomes
• Use technologies to develop and support communities of learning
• Extend the classroom community through appropriate educational uses of technologies
• Use technologies in ways that engage and support different learning styles, interests, abilities, and needs of the learner
